The history of Acceptance and Change University
Acceptance and Change University (ACU) was founded in Hargeisa, Somaliland, to address critical gaps in higher education, particularly in mental health, psychotherapy, and counseling. The university was established to provide locally accessible, high-quality academic programs that respond to the social and psychological needs of communities across Somalia and the Horn of Africa.
From its early beginnings, ACU was built on a mission of ethical practice, research excellence, and community engagement. The university integrates international academic standards with culturally responsive education and has taken key steps toward institutional development, including collaboration with government bodies, international partners, and the establishment of an Institutional Review Board (IRB) to support responsible and impactful research.
